You’ve already planned your next do-it-yourself home care project, but you don’t know exactly where to begin. ‘How to clean carpet?’ you ask. We’re letting you in on some of the hacks and secrets that homeowners use to clean their carpets.
Cleaning carpet like a pro
Residential floors come in many varieties. There are laminate, bamboos, vinyl, tiles, cork, and more. However, carpet remains to be at the top of the list. In the U.S. alone, the carpet industry accounts for about 51% of the following market. That translates to more than $10 billion in revenue in the last year.
Your carpet woes aren’t as common as you think—millions of homeowners out on Google typing out “How to clean carpet” in their search boxes.
Blotting is the key.
Don’t make the mistake of rubbing the dirt or stain on your carpet. Quick rubbing spreads the stain and drives it further into the mat. You need to be gentle and just dab the stained area with a cleaning solution and a clean cloth. Put just enough pressure on the stain and let the solution the stain up. Always blot the stain from the outside of the stain to inward – aim toward the center. The stain spreads when you smear it from inward to outside.
Make your deep clean solution.
Chemicals and cleaning products for deep clean methods are too strong, and some people are sensitive to certain chemical ingredients. Avoid using harsh chemicals and make the mix yourself.
Use vinegar, dish soap, and water mix. Put in a tablespoon of dish soap in a quart of warm water and add ¼ teaspoon of white vinegar. Test the solution first before you apply it to the stain. A club soda mix is also as effective. It works as a cleanser when sprayed on the carpet stain.
It’s most effective for removing blood and wine stains, only if used correctly. Remove the stain and rinse the spot with clean, warm water. Use your hands to brush the carpet strand in its natural direction. Put on white paper towels on the stained area and weigh it down using a book or other similar item. The paper towel absorbs the dampness from the carpet and takes away the stain.
Shaving cream works magic.
An ordinary shaving cream removes just about every kind of stain. Use the cream and apply it directly to the stain. Let it sit for half an hour and once the cream is set, blot it using a white cloth. Spray the stained area using a 50/50 mix of white vinegar water, then use the cloth to wipe the stained area.
Consistency is the best way to keep your carpets clean. You don’t need big machines, and you don’t need to buy branded chemicals as well. You, however, need to have more patience to clean your floor covering.
